We all were once.

If you’re wondering what to expect, we understand. We were all new here once too. Whether you are new to faith, just coming back after some time away from church, or new to the area, you’ll find lots of people in our pews who have been in the same place. Here are some questions we had before our first visit.

New?

First things first. When is church?

We meet on Sundays at 10am during the school year. During the summer, from mid-June through Labor Day weekend, we meet at 9am.

Where are you ?

The church is in downtown Exeter at 21 Front Street. We are next door to the town hall, and just up the street from the bandstand. Look for the big white church building with three red front doors. If you see the post office on your left, you’ve gone just a bit too far.

Where should we park?

There are a few different options. There is free on-street parking on and around Front Street. Free municipal lots are also within a block of the church off of Water Street and Center Street. We also reserve spots on the church’s circular driveway, located next to the church, for those who have need to be closer for any reason.

Do I need to dress up?

Not unless you want to! On a typical Sunday you’ll see a mix of jeans and business casual. Some members like getting dressed up for church. Others prefer to come dressed for the rest of their day. There’s no judgement from us. Come in what feels good.

What’s worship like?

We like to think that we are traditional but not stuffy. Our worship services are similar to what you’ll find at most mainline Protestant churches. Lasting about an hour, a typical service includes the singing of hymns, a children’s lesson, the reading of Scripture, a sermon, a time to share prayers and joys, and special music offered by our choir. On the first Sunday of the month we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, also called Holy Communion.

What about kids?

We love welcoming children of all ages to church. We respect each family’s decisions around how they would like their children to be involved. During worship our nursery is open downstairs for infants and toddlers. If you’d prefer your child to stay with you, though, please rest assured that we never mind hearing a baby talking or crying. For older children, our elementary church school takes place during the worship hour. Children pre-K and above begin worship with their families, and then are invited to come forward for the children’s sermon near the beginning of worship. After that, those participating in church school will go downstairs to the classrooms. Our church school program teaches the values of our faith through hands-on activities like cooking, art, and games. We follow safe church policies for all activities, and all volunteers have been background checked.

How about after church?

Each week we set out coffee and snacks for those who would like to stick around for conversation and community. You are always welcome. It’s a great time to make connections with others. If you need to leave right after church, though, there’s no pressure.

Are you going to make me stand up and introduce myself?

No. We promise.

Is this church LGBTQ affirming?

We want to highlight this question because we know a lot of churches say they welcome all but, once you get involved, tell LGBTQ folks that they need to change. We don’t think that’s honest, and we know a lot of good people have been hurt that way. So, let’s make it plain: the Congregational Church in Exeter fully affirms members of the LGBTQ community and their families and friends.
